In the Wake of Poseidon
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
In the Wake of Poseidon · King Crimson's second album was released in May 1970, at a moment when the group was falling apart. Ian McDonald and Michael Giles had left after the first American tour, and Greg Lake was about to join forces with Keith Emerson. Robert Fripp took over part of the keyboards. Lake nevertheless sang on almost all of the songs, the Giles brothers returned temporarily and the jazz pianist Keith Tippett took part.
The album follows the template of In the Court of the Crimson King closely. It opens with an a cappella piece, Peace, which returns twice later on. Pictures of a City has jazz influences, and the longest track, The Devils Triangle, is a dark instrumental piece based on Mars by Gustav Holst. Critics praised the performance and production, although later listeners found it too close a copy of the first record. In England the album reached number 4.
