Telefunken Blues
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Telefunken Blues actually consists of two sessions. The first was recorded on 1 November 1954 in Hollywood, with Milt Jackson and Percy Heath of the Modern Jazz Quartet, saxophonists Frank Morgan and Walter Benton and pianist Gerald Wiggins. The second followed on 7 February 1955 at Van Gelder Studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, with members of Count Basie's band and arranger Ernie Wilkins. Drummer Kenny Clarke leads both groups. The album was released on the Savoy label.
On the first four tracks, such as Strollin' and Sonor, Jackson plays vibraphone. On the last four, including Telefunken Blues and Klook's Nook, he sits at the piano and a larger ensemble with trombone, flute and baritone saxophone can be heard. Jim Todd's review on Allmusic found everyone in good form, but the 1954 session the most interesting.
