See See the Sun

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

See See the Sun is the first album by Kayak, a Dutch progressive rock band. It came out in 1973 on Harvest Records. The line-up consisted of Max Werner on vocals, Johan Slager on guitar, Ton Scherpenzeel on keyboards, Cees van Leeuwen on bass guitar and Pim Koopman on drums. Koopman also sang the lead part himself in Lovely Luna and Forever Is a Lonely Thought.

The best-known and strangest track is Mammoth. It is one of the few pop singles with a barrel organ. The organ, De Flamingo, was too big to get into the studio, so the melody was recorded outside. Because the organ is operated by hand, the tempo kept changing, and that made it very hard to fit the piece into the rest of the song. On Lyrics, guests played violin and cello.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Mammoth and notice the barrel organ: hear how the organ's tempo wavers slightly against the rest of the band.
