Bachata rosa
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bachata rosa · Bachata Rosa was released on 11 December 1990 on Karen Records and is the fifth album by Juan Luis Guerra and his group 4.40. Bachata was then considered the music of the Dominican countryside, with lyrics the public found too coarse, played on acoustic guitar with bongos and maracas. He began experimenting with the genre in collaboration with Sonia Silvestre, which produced Como Abeja al Panal. He wrote and produced everything himself and recorded at his own 4-40 studio in New York, with synthesizers.
The album has ten tracks, four of them bachata. Rosalía is a merengue and Como Abeja al Panal turns into salsa halfway through. La Bilirrubina is a merengue about a man in hospital with too much bilirubin from love and jealousy. Bachata Rosa was inspired by a poem by Pablo Neruda. The album brought bachata to a large audience and won a Grammy for Best Tropical Latin Album.
