Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Johnny Cash With His Hot and Blue Guitar · In 1955 Johnny Cash came to audition at Sun Records as a gospel singer. Owner Sam Phillips thought that was not commercially promising and sent him back to come up with a different sound. He returned with Hey Porter and Cry! Cry! Cry!, his first single in July 1955. On it he was accompanied by guitarist Luther Perkins and bassist Marshall Grant, whom Phillips called the Tennessee Two.
The album, which came out on 11 October 1957, was one of Sun's first LPs. It contains four singles: Cry! Cry! Cry!, Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk the Line and So Doggone Lonesome. Folsom Prison Blues reached the country chart's top five in early 1956. I Walk the Line spent six weeks at number one on the country chart and also entered the pop top twenty. Phillips produced, and later reissues added demos and alternate takes.
