Penny Arcade

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Penny Arcade is a jazz album released on CTI Records. It was recorded in October 1973 at Van Gelder Studio, with Rudy Van Gelder as engineer and Creed Taylor as producer. Joe Farrell plays tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, flute and piccolo, and he is surrounded by a strong group: Herbie Hancock on piano, Joe Beck on guitar, Steve Gadd on drums, Herb Bushler on bass and Don Alias on congas. The title piece is by Joe Beck, Too High is by Stevie Wonder, and the saxophonist wrote the other three pieces himself.

DownBeat found him a great player but only an average composer. The reviewer praised the fluid, melodic saxophone playing in Geo Blue and Hancock's acoustic piano in Cloud Cream.

Listening

Listening tip. In Geo Blue, listen to the saxophone and notice how fluid and melodic the lines sound.
