Blow by Blow

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Blow by Blow is the first album released under Jeff Beck's name as a solo artist. It was recorded in October 1974 and released in 1975 on Epic Records. The trio Beck, Bogert & Appice had split up in the spring of 1974, and Beck decided to make a record with instrumental tracks only. He brought back the keyboard player Max Middleton and asked George Martin to produce.

Stevie Wonder contributed two tracks: Cause We've Ended as Lovers and Thelonius, on which he also plays clavinet. There is also a cover of She's a Woman by the Beatles and a piece by Bernie Holland. The other tracks came from Beck and Middleton, and Martin wrote string arrangements for the closing track of each side. The album reached number 4 on the American album chart and is still Beck's most successful album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Cause We've Ended as Lovers and notice how the guitar sounds like a singing voice, without a singer.
