The Last of the Blue Devils
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Last of the Blue Devils is an album by the jazz pianist Jay McShann, recorded in 1977 and released by Atlantic. He plays piano and electric piano and sings, with a small band: Joe Newman on trumpet, Paul Quinichette and Buddy Tate on tenor sax, John Scofield on electric guitar, Milt Hinton on bass and Jackie Williams on drums.
The ten tracks range from blues and swing, such as Confessin' the Blues and Hootie Blues, to Jumpin' at the Woodside by Count Basie and Kansas City. The Globe and Mail wrote that the small line-up is ideal for bringing an old swing number like Jumpin' at the Woodside back to life, and that his singing on 'Tain't Nobody's Bizness If I Do adds a comic touch. AllMusic called the record a whole course in the history of blues-based jazz and strongly recommended it.
