Grits & Soul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Grits & Soul was James Brown's eighth album, released in August 1964 by Smash Records. He does not sing on it but plays organ, because that was how he got around his contractual obligations to King Records. On the tracks the name Ted Wright appears as composer, a pseudonym of his own.

It is an instrumental album with a line-up of musicians from Kinston, North Carolina. Nat Jones plays alto saxophone and wrote the arrangements, Melvin Parker plays drums and Robert Knight trumpet. The album also contains the first known recording of Maceo Parker, here still on baritone saxophone. In 1965 the record spent ten weeks on the Billboard chart and reached number 124.

Listening tip. Listen to Grits and notice how the track, without any vocals, runs on organ and horns.
