Welcome 2 Detroit

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Welcome 2 Detroit is J Dilla's first studio album and was released on 26 February 2001. It came after Fantastic, Vol. 2 by his group Slum Village and opened BBE's Beat Generation series, albums in which the producer takes centre stage. The cover credits both Jay Dee and J Dilla: it was the first time he officially used the name J Dilla.

The album showcases talent from his home town. Elzhi can be heard on Come Get It and Phat Kat on Featuring Phat Kat. The sound ranges from gritty hardcore hip hop in Pause to electronic psychedelia in B.B.E. Rico Suave Bossa Nova is inspired by the Brazilian group Azymuth, with a rhythm by Karriem Riggins. He sings the lead vocal himself on Think Twice, a cover of Donald Byrd, and replays all the instruments on African Rhythms. In the closing track One he thanks the people who helped him in hip hop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to African Rhythms and notice that all the instruments have been replayed here, including the spoken introduction of the original.
