Alexander's Ragtime Band

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

In 1911 Irving Berlin wrote Alexander's Ragtime Band, a cheerful song about a band that plays ragtime. The sheet music sold more than a million copies. Berlin had come to New York from Russia as a child, could not read music and played the piano on the black keys. Even so, he became one of the most successful songwriters of the century, with songs such as White Christmas and God Bless America.
