White Christmas

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Song

On 29 May 1942 in Los Angeles, Bing Crosby recorded White Christmas, a song by Irving Berlin for the film Holiday Inn, in about eighteen minutes. In the middle of the Second World War, many Americans longed for home, and the song struck that chord. It became the best-selling single ever, with an estimated fifty million copies or more. One well-written song could give a writer an income for life.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen for Crosby's calm, warm voice, which is almost spoken. This soft style of singing close to the microphone is called crooning.
