O.G. Original Gangster

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

O.G. Original Gangster · Ice-T recorded his fourth album between July 1990 and January 1991 in Los Angeles, and it was released in May 1991 on Sire Records. Seven producers worked on it, including Afrika Islam and DJ Aladdin, and the rapper himself was executive producer. Guests included Body Count and artists from his own Rhyme Syndicate. The CD had 24 tracks, the LP only 16.

The record contains raw stories about a crumbling American society, with humour and sometimes bitterness too. NME praised it as his best effort to date. Escape from the Killing Fields rewrites Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos by Public Enemy and explains the original metaphor. The Tower stands out as sad and booming. There are also critical voices: Select felt that the record works better as a manifesto than as music. In America the album went gold, and many people regard it as his best.
