Howlin’ Wolf
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Howlin’ Wolf · This 1962 album is really a compilation. Chess collected twelve singles that the Chicago bluesman had released between June 1957 and December 1961, almost all written by Willie Dixon. The producer was Ralph Bass. Because of the drawing of a rocking chair on the cover, the record is also known as The Rockin' Chair Album.
The record features tracks such as The Red Rooster, Spoonful and Back Door Man, with the singer's raw voice, guitar and harmonica, and accompaniment from, among others, Hubert Sumlin and Otis Spann. Rolling Stone described the collection as an outrageous set of songs about sex. Its influence reached far. Sam Cooke and the Rolling Stones made their own versions of Little Red Rooster, Cream recorded Spoonful, the Doors played Back Door Man and Led Zeppelin used lines from Back Door Man in Whole Lotta Love. In 1985 the record won a Blues Music Award as a classic.
