La voz
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
La voz · La Voz was the first solo album by the singer Héctor Lavoe, released in 1975 on Fania Records. He had previously worked with Willie Colón, and Colón now produced and arranged this record as well. Rubén Blades sang in the backing chorus.
The album revolves around Lavoe's voice. Colón left out long percussion or instrumental solos so that the singing had all the room it needed. The opener El Todopoderoso and Mi Gente were the two big hits in Latin America and the United States. In Mi Gente, Ray Maldonado plays a trumpet solo. According to Allmusic, Lavoe stood out for his heavenly sound, and the record sounds warm and refined. Later critics regard the album as a high point of 1970s salsa and admire Lavoe's improvisations and expressive voice.
