Comedia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Comedia is the third solo album by the Puerto Rican singer Héctor Lavoe. It came out in 1978 on Fania Records and was recorded at La Tierra Sound Studios in New York. Willie Colón produced the record and mixed almost all the tracks. The album has seven pieces, ranging from three and a half minutes to well over ten minutes.

The best-known piece is El Cantante, written by Rubén Blades. At well over ten minutes it is also the longest piece, and a violin plays on it. The album later received a great deal of recognition. In 2006 it appeared in a list of ten classic salsa records in the magazine Hispanic, and in October 2024 Rolling Stone named it one of the fifty best salsa albums of all time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to El Cantante, the opening track of well over ten minutes. Notice how the voice sustains for so long and which instruments sound alongside it.
