Love Is a Gentle Thing
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Love Is a Gentle Thing was released in 1959 on RCA Victor. The album consists of folk songs of varied moods, sung in a tender style. Two arrangers and conductors, Alan Greene and Bob Corman, divided the pieces between them. Edward Welker was the producer, David Stone Martin drew the sleeve and Paul Ackerman wrote the liner notes.
There are songs by a variety of writers, such as Times Are Gettin' Hard by Lee Hays of The Weavers and Go Away from My Window by John Jacob Niles. The album reached eighteenth place on Billboard's chart for mono albums. In March 1959 Billboard named it one of the week's winners and praised the sensitive singing. The AllMusic reviewer thought the songs by Hays and by Niles the best pieces, but found the variety limited.
