Moanin’ the Blues

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Moanin’ the Blues · Moanin' the Blues was released in 1952 on MGM Records as the second and last studio album by the American country singer Hank Williams. There was no new music on it: the songs had been recorded between 1947 and 1951 and mostly released before. The producer Fred Rose put the record together around a blues theme. Country LPs hardly sold at the time, so the album was probably not a high priority for the label.

Unlike his debut, which consisted mostly of B-sides, this record is full of hits. Lovesick Blues, Long Gone Lonesome Blues and Honky Tonk Blues reached number one on the country chart. Moanin' the Blues and I'm a Long Gone Daddy made the top ten. I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry did not chart, but many regard it as the finest song Williams wrote. Apart from Lovesick Blues, he wrote everything himself.

Listening tip. Listen to I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry and notice how the singer puts the loneliness of the title into his voice.
