Devil Between My Toes

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Devil Between My Toes is the debut of the indie rock band Guided by Voices. After the lukewarm reception of their first release in 1986 and the poor sales, the group stopped playing live and became a studio band. Steve Wilbur recorded most of the songs in his eight-track studio, and a few songs came about in Robert Pollard's basement. The record was self-funded and came out in an edition of 300 copies.

The sleeve shows Pollard's rooster Big Daddy, photographed by Mitch Mitchell through a fence. The sound has been described as post-punk with influences from R.E.M. In A Portrait Destroyed by Fire the guitar sounds like a farewell song, while Discussing Wallace Chambers is lighter and foreshadows something of the later sound.
