Grievous Angel

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Grievous Angel · After a disorganised tour in the spring and summer of 1973, Gram Parsons recorded his second solo album at Wally Heider Studio 4 in Hollywood, with himself as producer. His singing partner Emmylou Harris and members of Elvis Presley's band, including James Burton and Glen Hardin, played on it. Parsons struggled with heroin and alcohol, but according to the bassist Emory Gordy the sessions were loose and full of energy. Because there was too little new material, he wrote two songs during the recording and used older songs. Shortly after the mixing he died of an overdose.

The record came out in January 1974. It is a blend of country and rock 'n' roll that he called Cosmic American Music. In the duet Love Hurts, Harris has a large role. The album sold poorly, but critics were full of praise. His widow had Harris removed from the front of the sleeve and had one song left off.

Listening

Listening tip. In Love Hurts, listen to the two voices of Parsons and Emmylou Harris and how they find each other in the chorus.
