Demon Days
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Demon Days · This second album by the virtual band was made at Studio 13 in London, mainly under the direction of the producer Danger Mouse. A film plan for the band was scrapped, but themes from the script remained. The main inspiration came from a train journey from Beijing to Mongolia, in which Damon Albarn travelled through a deserted, withered region of China. He saw the album as a loose concept record about a world in a state of night, with apocalyptic and post-9/11 themes. It is darker than the debut.
The music mixes alternative rock, hip hop, pop, trip hop and art rock. Guests included De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, MF Doom, Ike Turner and Dennis Hopper. Feel Good Inc. became the best-known single and won the band its only Grammy. The reviews were positive and showed that the project was more than a side step. Later the album grew into one of the most highly regarded records of the century.
