One Nation Under a Groove

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

One Nation Under a Groove is Funkadelic's tenth studio album, the rock-oriented sister project of George Clinton's funk collective. It was released in September 1978 on Warner Bros. The recording took place at United Sound Studio in Detroit. One track was recorded live at the Monroe Civic Center in Louisiana. It was the first record on which the keyboard player and songwriter Walter Junie Morrison took part.

According to one academic, the music draws on progressive rock, progressive soul, Hendrix and Sly Stone. Critics heard distorted guitar riffs in the style of Hendrix, even where the music was meant for the dance floor. The album became the group's most commercially successful: it was number 1 on the R&B chart and went platinum. It is regarded as the finest realisation of Funkadelic's ambitions and as a source of ideas for later rock and rap.
