Cosmic Slop
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Cosmic Slop was released on 9 July 1973 on Westbound Records. It was Funkadelic's fifth studio album. It was a commercial failure, with no single in the charts, and reached number 112 on the pop chart and number 21 on the R&B chart. Only long after its release did critics rate it more highly. It was the first album with a sleeve and liner notes by Pedro Bell, who continued to do so until the end of the band. The guitarist Eddie Hazel, who had left a year earlier, no longer plays on it.
Bernie Worrell plays keyboards, melodica and the strings on This Broken Heart, which Ben Edwards sings. Garry Shider and Ron Bykowski play guitar. You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure reworks the Parliaments single Heart Trouble from 1965. The title track, with Shider as singer, was later often remade by new line-ups. Lloyd Bradley wrote in Q that the album is a link between frighteningly dark musings and outright weirdness.
