You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby · In the 1990s Norman Cook bought obscure vinyl records and built a library of samples on floppy disks from the snippets he liked. With an Akai sampler and an Atari computer he edited them into collages. Usually he added the bass line himself and sampled the rest in big beat style. Together with his engineer Simon Thornton he finished the tracks in his studio in Brighton, the House of Love. This was his second album under the name Fatboy Slim.
It was released in October 1998 on Skint Records and became his worldwide breakthrough. Four singles reached the British top ten: The Rockafeller Skank, Gangster Trippin, Praise You and Right Here, Right Now. Critics praised the sound and style, the album topped the British chart and earned Cook a Brit Award in 1999. The title comes from an advertising slogan for cigarettes.
