Einzelhaft

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Einzelhaft is Falco's debut from 1982. In 1980 he, then still a member of Drahdiwaberl, signed a contract for three solo albums with producer Robert Ponger and manager Markus Spiegel. At the beginning of 1981 they began work on the record. They already had a melody for Der Kommissar. Reinhold Bilgeri was to sing it but refused, after which Falco took the song himself and wrote the lyrics within three days.

Der Kommissar was released in November 1981 and reached the top of the charts in more than twenty countries. It is regarded as an innovative and influential German-language rap song. Other tracks borrow heavily from David Bowie's Berlin trilogy: Nie mehr Schule uses the music of Speed of Life from Low, and Helden von heute is a rewrite of Heroes. Ganz Wien, the first single, reached number eleven in the Austrian Ö3-Hitparade.
