The Second Time Around

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Second Time Around · This is Etta James's second studio album, released in 1961 on Argo. Phil and Leonard Chess produced it, as they had her previous record At Last!. Riley Hampton was arranger and conductor of the orchestra. The LP had ten tracks, five per side.

As on At Last!, the producers put strings beneath her voice, which also won her a place on the pop circuit. Three singles were released: Don't Cry Baby, The Fool That I Am and Seven Day Fool. They became hits in the R&B and pop charts in 1961. The album also contains covers of pop and jazz standards, such as Dream. AllMusic gave the record four out of five stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in Dream to how the strings surround James's voice.
