At Last!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

At Last! · Etta James recorded her debut album for Argo Records, a label of the brothers Phil and Leonard Chess, who also produced the album. They believed that her voice could also appeal to the pop audience. For that reason many tracks were given an orchestral accompaniment, written and conducted by Riley Hampton.

The album combines blues numbers with jazz and pop standards. It includes Stormy Weather, A Sunday Kind of Love and Willie Dixon's I Just Want To Make Love To You. Four tracks were also released as singles: All I Could Do Was Cry, Trust In Me, At Last and My Dearest Darling. In At Last, according to one critic, the singer shifts from powerful blues shouting to light, airy phrasing. The album received glowing reviews, Rolling Stone called it an enchanting album, and many artists have since covered At Last.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen in At Last to how the voice changes: at times powerful and raw, then soft and floating, while the orchestra keeps playing underneath.
