A Girl Like Me

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Girl Like Me is the first solo album by Emma Bunton, one of the Spice Girls. It was released on 16 April 2001 on Virgin Records, after the Spice Girls had stopped recording in 2000. Bunton recorded the record between July 1999 and October 2000 in Dublin, London, Stockholm and Los Angeles, among other places. Producers included Steve Mac, Richard "Biff" Stannard, Julian Gallagher and Tin Tin Out. Bunton wrote most of the lyrics.

It is a pop album with influences from R&B and dance. There are two covers on it: Sunshine on a Rainy Day and What I Am, which Bunton recorded with Tin Tin Out. What Took You So Long? became her first number 1 in the United Kingdom. The album reached number 4 on the British albums chart and was certified gold by the BPI. Critics praised the songs but found the production lacking in character. In 2002 Bunton left Virgin.

Listening tip. Listen to What I Am and notice how Bunton and Tin Tin Out turn the song by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians into a danceable pop version.
