The Marshall Mathers LP

The Marshall Mathers LP · After the success of The Slim Shady LP, Eminem had gone from underground rapper to celebrity, and he did not like it: he no longer trusted anyone. The third album was released on 23 May 2000. It was recorded in several studios around Detroit, with producers such as Dr. Dre, Mel-Man and F.B.T. The lyrics deal with his fame, the criticism of his music and the estrangement from his family. A trip to Amsterdam, with heavy drug use, made him decide to write openly about drugs.
The sound is hardcore and satirical hip hop with horrorcore. The Real Slim Shady, The Way I Am and Stan became singles; Stan is about an obsessed fan and gave the English language the word stan. The album caused a great stir through lyrics that were seen as violent, homophobic and misogynistic. Even so, it received positive reviews, and Rolling Stone named it the best album of 2000. It won a Grammy for Best Rap Album.
