The Slim Shady LP
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Slim Shady LP · After the failure of his debut Infinite in 1996, Eminem invented the alter ego Slim Shady, whom he introduced in 1997 on the Slim Shady EP. At the Rap Olympics in Los Angeles he came second, and that brought him to Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. The second album, from 1999, was recorded in Ferndale, Michigan. Dr. Dre often made a beat first, over which Eminem rapped loosely. The production was by Dr. Dre, the Bass Brothers and Eminem himself.
The beats are bass-heavy and recall West Coast hip hop. The lyrics, often told from the point of view of Slim Shady, contain cartoonish violence that, he said, was meant as a horror film. They also deal with poverty. My Name Is became his first entry in the Billboard Hot 100. Critics praised the fresh style and the black humour, and the record brought him two Grammys, although he was controversial for his lyrics.
