His Hand in Mine
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
His Hand in Mine was released on 23 November 1960 on RCA Victor. It was the first of three gospel albums that Elvis Presley released in his lifetime. He had loved church music since his youth and often used it to warm up before performances and recording sessions. He had already devoted an EP to gospel, Peace in the Valley, and he was keen to make a full album. That fitted the plans of manager Colonel Tom Parker, who wanted to give him a family-friendly image.
The recording took place on 30 and 31 October 1960 at RCA Studio B in Nashville, and all the tracks were completed in a single fourteen-hour session. On the record we hear The Jordanaires, pianist Floyd Cramer and guitarist Scotty Moore, among others. Surrender and Crying in the Chapel were recorded during the same session but saved for singles. The album reached number 13 on the American chart and later went gold and platinum.
