My Aim Is True
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
My Aim Is True · Under his real name, Declan MacManus, Elvis Costello had played in clubs and pubs since 1970, without a record contract. In August 1976 he signed with Stiff Records, which gave him a new first name and an image that suited the emerging punk scene. The record was made between late 1976 and early 1977 in six four-hour sessions at Pathway Studios in London, for about 2,000 pounds. Nick Lowe produced. The backing came from the American country rock group Clover, who did not appear on the cover because of contract problems.
The music combines punk, new wave and pub rock with rock and roll, R&B and rockabilly. The lyrics are grim and revolve around revenge and guilt. The first three singles did not chart, but the record itself was praised and reached number fourteen in the United Kingdom.
