Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road · It began with a plan to record in Jamaica. Problems with the sound system and the studio piano, a boxing match in Kingston and political unrest made the band leave before anything usable was on tape. In 1973 the record was made in two weeks at the Château d'Hérouville in France, where Elton John had worked before. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics in about two and a half weeks. Producer Gus Dudgeon had not planned a double album, but there were enough songs.

Through cinematic images the record builds a longing for a childhood that is over. On it you find Bennie and the Jets, Candle in the Wind, a tribute to Marilyn Monroe, and the eleven-minute Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding. The album spent eight weeks at number one in the United States, was given a place in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003 and is regarded as one of his best.
