Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book

Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Cole Porter Song Book · This 1956 double album was Ella Fitzgerald's first for the new label Verve, and the first that Verve released. Manager and producer Norman Granz wanted to make her more than a singer for jazz lovers. He therefore chose a songbook of numbers by Cole Porter, with a studio orchestra conducted by Buddy Bregman. The accompaniment had to change just enough to let jazz show through here and there. The recording took place in February and March 1956 in Hollywood.

It became the start of a series of eight songbook albums, each devoted to a different composer from the Great American Songbook. Granz played the whole record to Porter, who merely remarked on how good the singer's diction was. In 2000 the album entered the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2003 the Library of Congress chose it for the National Recording Registry.
