On the Border
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
On the Border · On their third album the band wanted a more robust rock sound than the country rock of the first two records. It began with producer Glyn Johns at Olympic Studios in London, but the group felt he emphasised their country sound too much. They returned to California and continued with Bill Szymczyk, in Miami and Los Angeles. Guitarist Don Felder, an old friend of Bernie Leadon, played slide guitar on Good Day in Hell.
The three singles were Already Gone, James Dean and The Best of My Love, the band's first number one. On My Man, Leadon commemorates his friends Duane Allman and Gram Parsons. Critics saw the record as a transitional work that looked back to earlier work and ahead to what was still to come.
