Dusty in Memphis
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dusty in Memphis · To breathe new life into her career, Dusty Springfield signed with Atlantic Records, the label of her soul idol Aretha Franklin. The condition was that she work with producer Jerry Wexler. Together they chose eleven songs, mostly pop numbers, which were recorded in the Southern soul style. The first sessions took place at American Sound Studio in Memphis, with the Sweet Inspirations and the studio musicians known as the Memphis Boys. Her vocals and the orchestral parts followed later in New York.
The work was not easy. Springfield had doubts, partly out of fear of being compared with the great soul singers who had worked in the same studio. Son of a Preacher Man became the best-known track; Breakfast in Bed also comes close to Southern soul. The album initially sold poorly but grew into her best-known work. In 2001 it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2020 the National Recording Registry.
