Bad Girls

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Bad Girls was released on 25 April 1979 on Casablanca Records, as a double album. Donna Summer, already known as the queen of disco, again worked with Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, but also with people she had not yet worked with. Because punk and heavy metal were by now also in the charts, the team decided to bring a more rock-oriented sound to some of the songs. Other songs instead got a soul and R&B feel. In this way it became her most varied album so far.

Hot Stuff and Bad Girls open the album, with synthesizers that give the rock sound an electronic, danceable side. Both went to number 1 on the American singles chart, and Hot Stuff earned a Grammy. Dim All the Lights was the third single. The album became one of the most successful of her career, was nominated for Album of the Year and is regarded as one of the best disco albums ever. It was her last studio album for Casablanca.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hot Stuff and notice how the guitars and the synthesizers together make a rock-edged and yet danceable sound.
