The Young Bloods

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Young Bloods is an album by the trumpeter Donald Byrd and the alto saxophonist Phil Woods, recorded in 1956 and released on the Prestige label. They are accompanied by the pianist Al Haig, the bassist Teddy Kotick and the drummer Charlie Persip.

The repertoire consists of six pieces. Most come from Woods himself, such as Dupeltook, Once More and House of Chan. There are also two well-known songs: Dewey Square by Charlie Parker and Lover Man, a classic written by Jimmy Davis, Ram Ramirez and James Sherman. Scott Yanow of AllMusic strongly recommended the album to lovers of straight-ahead jazz, even though the record does not last very long.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Dewey Square and notice how trumpet and alto saxophone relate to each other in this piece by Charlie Parker.
