In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

In the Good Old Days (When Times Were Bad) · In September and October 1968 Dolly Parton recorded this album at RCA Studio B in Nashville, under the producer Bob Ferguson. It was her third solo album for RCA Victor and the first on which she wrote half of the songs herself. That gave her a voice of her own alongside the covers of other people's country hits, such as Harper Valley PTA, D.I.V.O.R.C.E. and The Carroll County Accident.

In the title song she looks back on her poor childhood. She values what that time taught her, but does not want to go back to it. Rolling Stone later called this the first song in which she directly addresses that childhood in the Smoky Mountains. The song was the only single. The album received praise from Billboard, which singled out her empathy in the title song, and reached number 15 on the country chart.
