Just Because I’m a Woman

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Just Because I’m a Woman · In September 1967 Dolly Parton joined Porter Wagoner's show. He also helped her get a contract with RCA Victor. Because her contract with Monument was still running, at first she was only allowed to record duets with Wagoner. Her first solo record for RCA, produced by Bob Ferguson, was recorded in December 1967 at RCA Studio B in Nashville.

She wrote the title song after her husband questioned her about her past. The song was daring for its time: a woman confronts her boyfriend about his judgement, while he had done the same himself. It became the only single and reached number 17 on the Billboard country chart. The Bridge stands out for its subject and for its abrupt ending in the middle of a verse. AllMusic called the record one of her best early albums and praised her as a singer and songwriter.
