My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
My Blue Ridge Mountain Boy was Dolly Parton's fourth solo album and the last she recorded in the 1960s. The producer Bob Ferguson recorded it in May and June 1969 at RCA Studio B in Nashville. It became her first solo album in the top ten of the country chart and her first on the Billboard 200.
Many songs tell a story. In the title song a girl from a small town in New Orleans becomes a prostitute and dreams of the boy she left behind. Evening Shade is about an orphanage where the children set fire to the building. In Daddy a daughter begs her father not to leave her mother for a younger woman. There are also covers of In the Ghetto and Games People Play. Billboard called it her best album so far. Rolling Stone later included Evening Shade and the title song in its list of her best songs.
