Making Movies

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Making Movies is Dire Straits' third album and was released on 17 October 1980. Mark Knopfler wrote the songs in the first half of that year and asked Jimmy Iovine to produce, known for his work with Bruce Springsteen. Iovine also brought in the keyboardist Roy Bittan of the E Street Band. Recording took place at The Power Station in New York. During the sessions David Knopfler left the band; Mark re-recorded his guitar parts. Shortly after the release Alan Clark and Hal Lindes joined, making the group a quintet.

The record contains seven songs. Romeo and Juliet became the biggest single, and Tunnel of Love opens the album with an intro taken from The Carousel Waltz. Rolling Stone wrote that Knopfler stepped out of the shadow of his influences and placed the record at number 52 among the best albums of the 1980s.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tunnel of Love and notice the beginning: which melody do you hear before the band comes in, and what happens to the atmosphere afterwards?
