Tunnel of Love

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Tunnel of Love is Bruce Springsteen's eighth studio album and was released on 9 October 1987. Members of the E Street Band played on it from time to time, but Springsteen recorded most of it himself, often with drum machines and synthesizers. The record therefore does not officially count as an album by that band. The lyrics are about love going wrong, a consequence of changes in his private life, above all his faltering marriage. He wrote about the difficulty of adult love, not about stadium anthems for the working man.

The songs are mid-tempo ballads and pop-style anthems. Brilliant Disguise became one of his biggest hits, and Tunnel of Love, One Step Up, Tougher Than the Rest and Spare Parts were also released as singles. The title song won a Grammy. Critics praised the record for its honesty. Rolling Stone later placed it on its list of the hundred best albums of the eighties.
