Deep Purple in Rock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Deep Purple in Rock · In 1969 the band had made three albums, but lacked a clear direction. After hearing Led Zeppelin's debut, the guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wanted to play really heavy. The singer Rod Evans was replaced by Ian Gillan, and the bassist Roger Glover joined. This is how the Mark II line-up came about, which played on this album for the first time. The group rehearsed in a community centre in Hanwell, because a lot of noise was allowed there. The recording sessions in London ran from October to April, in between gigs.

The music had to sound hard and heavy and to capture the group's live sound. Child in Time and Speed King had already grown on stage. The album became the breakthrough in Europe and reached number four in the United Kingdom. In the United States it did less well. It is still praised as an important early example of hard rock and heavy metal.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Child in Time and notice how the song builds step by step from a quiet beginning to something much heavier.
