Fireball

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Fireball · After the success of In Rock, Deep Purple had to make a follow-up, in the Mark II line-up of Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Paice, Roger Glover and Ian Gillan. All the concerts caused the group health problems: Lord suffered with his back, Glover with his stomach, and Blackmore and Gillan fell into conflict. The recording was done between tours, from September 1970 to June 1971. The first session yielded only Anyone's Daughter. The Mule came about at Welcombe Manor in Devon and Demon's Eye was the last to be recorded.

In the United States the album was released in July 1971, with Strange Kind of Woman in place of Demon's Eye. In Britain in September it became the first of the band's three number 1 albums. The title song reached number 15 as a single.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Fireball and notice the drumming of Ian Paice, who used a double bass drum for it.
