Uh‐oh

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Uh‐oh · Uh-Oh was David Byrne's second studio album, in 1992. Nick Launay produced it. The cover shows angels around a cartoon dog, a nod to the word god spelled backwards. For the record the singer worked with a large group of musicians, including brass, strings and percussionists, with Angel Fernandez as arranger.

The sound is full of Latin American influences. The Orlando Sentinel felt the Afro-Brazilian influences were better integrated than on Rei Momo from 1989. The New York Times wrote that he had finally made the Pan-American dance album he had been seeking since the mid-1980s. The Guardian called it his most Talking Heads-like solo record. The song She's Mad reached number three on the Modern Rock chart.

Listening

Listening tip. In She's Mad, listen to how the rhythms and the horns lay a danceable foundation, while the vocals sit nervously on top.
