The Forest

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Forest was released in June 1991 and is a largely instrumental album by David Byrne. It is inspired by the Epic of Gilgamesh and is set in the period of the late Industrial Revolution. Part of this orchestral music was first used in a theatre piece of the same name, directed by Robert Wilson. That piece premiered in 1988 at the Theater der Freien Volksbühne in West Berlin.

After the record, Forestry also appeared, a maxi single with dance and industrial remixes of pieces from the album. Jack Dangers, Rudy Tambala and Anthony Capel made those remixes, including of Ava and Nineveh. The cover shows no forest, but an industrial photograph of pipes and a pump, in keeping with the theme of the album.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ava and notice that this is not a song with vocals, but an instrumental piece that is above all about the sound of the instruments.
