Diamond Dogs

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Diamond Dogs · After Pin Ups, David Bowie was not sure where his career was heading. He had disbanded the Spiders from Mars and parted company with the producer Ken Scott. He had several plans: a musical based on Ziggy Stardust, an adaptation of Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell and an apocalyptic city story after William S. Burroughs. Orwell's widow refused the rights, and the musical never happened. What remained was recorded in London and the Netherlands in early 1974.

Bowie produced the record himself and, in the absence of Mick Ronson, also played lead guitar. Tony Visconti returned for the string arrangements and the mix. The sound is raw and slightly clumsy, and it was his last glam rock album. Rebel Rebel was released ahead of it as a single. Critics missed coherence, but the record went to number one in the United Kingdom.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Rebel Rebel and notice the guitar riff that carries the song, played in that raw sound which gives the record its own flavour.
