Drum Ode

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Drum Ode was recorded in May 1974 and released a year later on ECM. The saxophonist Dave Liebman assembled a group of thirteen musicians: the guitarist John Abercrombie, the pianist Richard Beirach, the bassist Gene Perla, the singer Eleana Steinberg and above all eight percussionists, among them Bob Moses, Jeff Williams, Barry Altschul, Badal Roy and Collin Walcott. Liebman plays soprano and tenor saxophone and alto flute.

The programme opens with Goli Dance, a traditional piece lasting only half a minute, and includes original pieces by Liebman, among them Loft Dance and The Iguana's Ritual. Your Lady is by John Coltrane. The Penguin Guide to Jazz included the record in its Core Collection and AllMusic gave it three stars.

Listening

Listening tip. In Loft Dance, listen to the many percussionists and notice how the rhythms weave in and out of one another.
