Dave Digs Disney
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Dave Digs Disney is a 1957 studio album by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, with jazz versions of songs from the Disney films Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio and Snow White. The quartet had been playing Disney songs live now and then for some time, but it took a family visit to Disneyland to convince the pianist to phone his producer with the idea for a whole album. Disney music was then regarded as light pop, beneath the level of jazz musicians. He took a financial risk, and it paid off well.
Paul Desmond plays alto saxophone, Joe Morello drums and Norman Bates bass. The original LP was released in mono only, although stereo tapes also existed. Some Day My Prince Will Come became a jazz standard, later recorded by Miles Davis and John Coltrane, among others. Other jazz musicians followed with Disney songs. It is one of the quartet's most popular albums.
